SPARC Collective

SPARC Collective is a group of alumni students that create work through field recording practice. In 2023 they created a work in collaboration with We In Front.

On a beautiful late May day a group of young artists based in London were invited by the We In Front walking group to join them on a walk through Huddersfield, taking in sites of importance to the Caribbean community. Starting at Venn Street, the now-demolished nightclub where performers of ska and soca and dub reggae sound systems from around the country and internationally once performed. We wound our way past Mackinley’s Caribbean & African Foodstore, to Sparrow Park, site of the town’s first black music club. Then through the original immigrant neighbourhood of Springwood, up to Greenhead Park to participate in the Carriacou Big Drum and Dance workshop. We heard lots of fascinating stories, enjoyed great music and dancing, and had wonderful conversations and many laughs. This soundwork aims to communicate this experience and share these important historical stories. The alumni students were Caitlin Bellas, Stephen Bradley, Carla Furnaces, Izzy McNally and Ben Roffey.
